We are anticipating an exciting October sale ahead at The Canterbury Auction Galleries, which will include over 100 lots of Oriental porcelain and works of art.

The Oriental section of our October sale will be up for auction on Wednesday 5th of October and will run from lots 490-609.  

Here is some highlights from the section...


Lot 490: A Chinese Longquan celadon glazed circular charger with fluted border and moulded rim, 15.75ins (40cm) diameter x 3.125ins (8cm) high, (Ming dynasty - 16th Century)

Lot 493: A Chinese blue and white porcelain baluster shaped jar decorated with prunus, peony and bamboo shoots within painted borders, 8ins (20.4cms) high (late Ming Dynasty - chips and firing cracks to rim and some flake chips to footrim)

Lot 510: A 19th Century Chinese "Famille Verte" porcelain baluster shaped vase of large size, enamelled in colours with figures in landscapes, 18.5ins (47cm) high, with carved wood stand and wooden lid (six character mark in blue within concentric circles to base)

Lot 523: A Chinese export porcelain "Tobacco Leaf" pattern supper set, comprising - octagonal bowl and cover and eight four sided bowls and covers, and circular shaped tray for same, the covers painted with "Tobacco Leaf" pattern and the dishes and tray with pink rose sprays, tray 15.25ins (38.7cm) diameter (19th Century - circa 1810 - tray and lid of central octagonal dish restored)

Lot 531: A Chinese red cinnabar lacquer circular box and cover, the cover carved in relief with a seated scholar playing a Qin, an attendant by his side and beneath a pine tree issuing from a rocky outcrop, the sides carved with Greek key ornament, 3.124ins (7.9cm) diameter x 1.625ins (4.2cm) high, (Qing Dynasty - Qianlong Period - chip to flange and rim of lower section)

Lot 551: A Chinese smoky rock crystal snuff bottle, the front carved in high relief with shou-lao accompanied by a deer beneath a pine tree, the reverse carved in low relief with rocky outcrop and pine tree, 3ins (7.6cm) high, and stopper for same, (Qing Dynasty - 18th Century - with some inclusions)

Lot 557: A Chinese celadon jade cylindrical brush pot carved in relief with mountain river landscape, with a figure in a pagoda, a figure seated on a bank beneath pine trees and other trees by rocky outcrops, and with a bridge to the reverse, 5.125ins (13cm) diameter x 5.125ins (13cm) high, (Quing Dynasty - Qianglong Period - stone with prominent natural flaw and ground chip to rim), and wood stand for same

Lot 568: A pair of Chinese silvery metal circular bowls with reeded rim, each cast in relief with two dragons chasing the flaming pearl, on a hammered ground and plain footrim, the interior engraved with a dragon, each 4.625ins (11.7cm) diameter x 2.375ins (6cm) high, with indistinct impressed mark to footrim, (combined weight 13ozs)

Lot 574: A Chinese patinated bronze two handled censer and cover, the pierced cover cast with dragon finial pearl and cloud scroll motifs, with cast dragon pattern handles, on three feet cast with lion dog faces, 6.5ins (16.5cm) diameter x 9.75ins (24.7cm) wide (from handle to handle) x 10.5ins (26.7cm) high (with impressed archaistic mark to base - 17th Century - some rubbing to patina)

Thursday 6th of October will also take a highly Oriental theme, and will be dedicated to The Keith Stevens Collection of Chinese Gods. The Keith Stevens Collection will run from lot 1000 – 1403 and will also include his library of books and a selection of bronzes, jades and paintings.
